Decomposition

Merino, mohair and cotton made on double-bed knitting machine. 2018. Featured in RISD's Textiles Biennial show.

Taking inspiration from nature, I was interested in the process of decomposition and the cyclicality it connotes. I chose to derive my ideas

and resulting visual representations from textual descriptions of decay and decomposition, rather than from images. I focused on descriptions in three main texts: As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, The Flies by Jean Paul Sartre, and Coraline by Neil Gaiman.

Inspired by RISD’s Fleet Library, I used the library database source code, the generalized database model, and the visualizing code developed by Phil Stearns to explore the paradoxically structured-yet-fluid nature of research.

Architectural Bodies

Mixed wovens; digital media. 2017

In this collection, I focused on the interplay of shadow, light, and layering on architectural structures to develop a collection of woven fabrics and print designs for an outerwear and suiting end use. The woven fabrics were created on a 24 harness compu-dobby loom, while the prints were made utilizing original artwork and Ned Graphics. The print designs as they are are at a fraction of their intended scales.

City Camouflage

This piece was designed for and featured in the RISD Museum's fifth Designing Traditions Biennial. I chose to focus on the moiré [pattern] formed by the layers of sheer fabric against one another as the main texture of my print. I chose the colors and the repeated motif in response to the original purpose of a cloak, which is protection. Since I was already going to work with a trompe l’oeil, I chose to riff off the concept of camouflage and blending into city surroundings via color and gritty geometric forms.
